Why BOD Matters in Biological Oxidation
First, let’s talk about why having a low effluent BOD is an indicator of good quality water. BOD – (Biological Oxygen Demand) is the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by aerobic biological organisms to break down organic material present in a given water sample at a certain temperature over a specific time period. You can gauge the effectiveness of wastewater treatment plants by monitoring effluent BOD levels.
Nitrates and phosphates in a body of water contribute to high BOD levels in receiving water bodies, since they are plant nutrients that can cause plant life and algae to grow quickly; when the algae eventually die off, aerobic decomposition depletes the oxygen in the water body, potentially killing aquatic life. It can also cause clogged filter aerators, which reduces process efficiency, and causes an increase in mechanical stress that results in less-than-desirable wastewater output.
Conversely, low BOD levels can inhibit nutrient removal. To get an accurate reading, BOD is measured for five days. Why? Because the first five days demand is more related to the Carbonaceous BOD, thus accounting for around 70% of the total BOD value.
